The first time I heard J. Cole was while surfing YouTube. He had posted a pod where he sang and rapped over an acoustic guitar. I imediately forwarded the link to several friends telling them there was a kid out of Fayetteville who may be a sure shot to make it big.
Not long after that I ran in to the 24 year old St. John's University grad at and Art Lifestyle event in Greensboro, North Carolina where several artist were performing including neo-soul crooner Rdy Currence (who was the biggest name there at the time). I hustled over to J.Cole to set up an interview but before we could sit down and chat it up, the emcee in him had drawn him back to the stage for a jam session with a motley crew of preformers.
Fast forward a few years and bingo - J. Cole signs on to be the first artist on Jay-Z's Roc
Nation imprint. While there is no telling where the Roc Nation imprint will show up (Sony, Warner Music Group, etc.) on thing is for certain - J. Cole has the skills, the presence and the right mentor to make him a household name.
Although J. Cole did spend his college years in NYC and the big city is where he got on, do not expect him to forget North Carolina or his hometown of Fayetteville. Cole is quick to give a shout out to his roots as is exemplified in what appears to be the first release off the forthcoming "The Warm Up" Mixtape.
