On Tuesday August 26, 2008 the United Way asked President and CEO Gloria Pace King to step down. She was not siphoning charitable contributions off in to her personal account. She was not caught speeding down I-85 after too many cocktails after a United Way event. And no, she does not have a sex-tape floating around the internet. So why was Gloria Pace King fired? She was fired for making too much money. Period.

In 1994 King was chosen from 175 applicants for the post as head of Charlottes United Way. After taking the post she was able to boost annual contributions by almost $30 million a year. King had plenty offers from other cities to come do the same for them but remained in Charlotte.

She was rewarded for constantly exceeding campaign goals until she was the highest paid in her post out of the thirty-four United Ways. Each time her pay was increased, the Charlotte Observer and locals raised eyebrows. Even her parking pass at Charlotte Douglas Airport was questioned. The echoes became to loud and now the City is losing in more was than one.

Not only is King out as President and CEO, she will also continue to draw the paycheck that brought the controverey about. Brilliant right? Consider all you do for the company you work for and imagine getting called in to human resources where they let you know that you are being paid to much and, thus, have been terminated. Insane. Save the race card. This could happen to anyone in this economic climate. Presidential candidate John McCain can’t even remember how many houses he has.

Gloria will move on and continue to prosper for sure. For now she should take a well deserved vacation.
